Holiday home, Carsaig
Carsaig is a tiny settlement wrapped around a shingle bay with views west across to the north end of Jura. The site is steeply sloping and wooded, characteristics that created the wish for a house with a small footprint that can thread between trees and make little impact on the ground. It is only six metres by four metres on each of its two levels.
It is experienced as a short sequence of spaces organised in an ascending spiral around and inside the house. One leaves the lane, proceeds up external stairs, steps into the hall of the bedroom level, continues up behind the kitchen and arrives in the living room. The sequence ends with a large recessed balcony that looks out across the bay.
