Mews Residence
Albany Street Lane, Edinburgh
This conversion of a semi-derelict grade A -listed mews in Edinburgh’s New Town has just secured planning permission after an appeal to the Scottish Ministers.
The existing garage + store will be converted into a two storey dwelling with an open plan living area on the upper storey, exposed to the expressive canted ceiling above.
The mews sits at the interface between the orthogonal geometry of the New Town and the irregular layout of old Broughton village.
Taking it’s cue from the interrupted morphology of Broughton Market, the dramatic metal clad roof not only responds to the historic context of the area, but also allows daylight to flood in the glazed gable ends whilst retaining privacy for the occupants.
It is intended that this proposal will aid the regeneration of the mews lane and reinforce the typological relationship between the existing townhouse and associated mews.
