Homes for the Future : Mail on Sunday

Prototype Lifetime Home

OCA are finalists in the 2009 Mail on Sunday newspaper Homes for the Future competition. The winning design will be announced later in the year. Seven submissions were selected from entries across the UK by a team of judges including RIBA President Sunand Prasad and Alison Brookes. The eventual winner will be chosen by public vote, organised by the Mail on Sunday.

This design, called the Allsorts House, has been designed with the utmost flexibility in mind. As families and couples circumstances change, this home can accommodate their differing requirements without the need for costly alterations or extension. Constraining elements like service routes for plumbing and drainage are kept to one side in a ‘service wall’ that can be easily accessed to adapt bathrooms. The rest of the house is flexible and able to be divided into a wide variety of rooms. Instead of the conventional stair running parallel to a hall and party wall, here it runs perpendicular, providing blank flanking walls for flexible bedroom separating walls to be built against it.
