We were asked by South Ayrshire Council to design a development on three separate sites for approximately 19 affordable housing units and a six person Children’s Care Home in Forehill, Ayr. We developed four house types, including the children’s residential unit, three of which are adaptations of successfully completed affordable houses for Housing Associations elsewhere in Scotland. The house types were a mix of 2 and 3 bed units. We also proposed novel ways in which additional units could be incorporated without having a negative impact on the sites.

Our proposals illustrate the use of a menu of innovative construction techniques that have the building regulations as the energy baseline, whilst also offering the possibility of raising the energy savings target above the Building Regulations for one or more of the units (e.g Passivhaus standard for the children’s residential unit).
