This building, situated in the centre of Monterrey, is one of the finest examples of Legorreta’s approach to architecture. Inspired by Mexican traditions and based on the traditional house plan, Legorreta designed this dynamic concrete box punctured by small windows and wrapped by a 2m high marble strip that provides an appropriate scale at pedestrian level.

The main access is through a small aperture in one corner where a majestic dove (sculptured by Juan Soriano) is sited to honour Luis Barragan. Inside, Legorreta plays with light and colour creating different sensations as you move from vestibule to covered courtyard to gallery. Every hour this imposing central courtyard floods with water and the sound of falling water can be heard throughout the complex marking time’s progress.
