Masterplanning the Drum, Bo'ness

Oliver Chapman Architects has designed a community of eighty houses on the steep north facing slope overlooking the Firth of Forth as part of an invited competition entry for the Drum, Bo’ness. Working closely with Stewart Milne Homes, the street layout and plot configuration evolved to suit the natural topography of the slope and to maximise the sun’s exposure to each house. Half and full split house types accommodate the slope, minimising the requirement for unsightly and expensive under-building and retaining walls.

Cadell2’s ‘Urban Design Framework’ established the requirements for high quality design. Ideas for shared surface streets, parking courts, pedestrian routes within the site and connections beyond, were all developed into detailed proposals
